Football Risk Assessment
Football Risk Assessment
Football can be a dangerous sport. If you are responsible for a football team, professionally or for leisure/school purposes then you are responsible for ensuring an adequate football risk assessment has been conducted. This is a legal requirement.
We can provide you with expert consultants who can undertake the necessary measures to ensure that you are fully compliant with UK law.
Under the United Kingdom Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, football leaders/managers/coaches act as employers who must ensure the health and safety of players, referees and spectators who act as employees.
Following the acts, as a football leader you have a duty of care to control the risks associated with playing football. Therefore, the law requires that an adequate football risk assessment must be conducted to control these risks. In the event that a suitable and sufficient football risk assessment has not taken place, the ‘responsible person’ i.e. the football coach or manager will be held accountable. If the ‘responsible person’ is found guilty of negligence, severe consequences will follow, taking the form of heavy fines and/or compensation payouts. Therefore, it is vital that you undertake a football risk assessment immediately.

What needs to be completed with a football risk assessment
Current regulations state key components that must be completed to ensure a suitable and sufficient football risk assessment has been carried out. These are:
- Identifying the hazards (eg.dehydration in hot weather)
- Identifying the people at risk (including players, referees and spectators)
- Evaluate these risks on a scale of low-high and then remove or reduce risks (eg. providing water and first-aiders)
- Record findings and issue training where necessary
- Review and regularly update the football risk assessment.
In order to ensure that an appropriate football risk assessment has been conducted, a competent person is required. A competent person must have experience, qualifications and expert knowledge of football health and safety, being able to implement protective measures where necessary.
