What Does PUWER Stand For?

PUWER stands for the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 which places a duty of care on the employer to ensure that their employees are using work equipment in a safe and correct manner.

The 3 main aims of PUWER are to ensure that businesses take the necessary measures to ensure work equipment is suitable, maintained and inspected.

If you need help meeting your obligations to PUWER, and don't really know what it stands for... then call us on 0800 211 8331

If you are an employer and your workers use any equipment such as machinery, appliances, apparatus, tools or installation equipment, then you must conduct a PUWER risk assessment. This is a legal obligation. We can provide you with the specialist PUWER services you require to ensure you are fully compliant with UK law.

What does PUWER mean?

Due to the broadness of the term ‘work equipment’, it is highly likely that your workplace must abide by PUWER in some form. Work equipment can be anything from hammers and ladders to any equipment that employees are allowed to provide themselves.

Under PUWER, employers must ensure that work equipment provided is:

  • Suitable and safe to use
  • Maintained in a good and safe condition
  • Only used by people who have received the necessary training and information
  • Accompanied with suitable measures to prevent accidents such as protective devices and controls
  • Used in accordance with any specific requirements.

To ensure that your workplace is meeting PUWER guidance, a competent person is needed. A competent person must assess any work equipment hazards in the workplace and identify and evaluate ways of reducing or removing the hazards. A competent person must have experience, qualifications and the necessary training to undertake an efficient PUWER risk assessment.

We can provide you with expert consultants who can undertake a comprehensive and robust PUWER risk assessment, ensuring that your business is fully covered.
