Introduction
Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) are useful pieces of plant equipment when used properly. However, they combine height with mobility and can be extremely dangerous if misused.
Main points
- Ensure the correct MEWP is selected for the task (ground, height, or SWL).
- Only suitably trained operators can use MEWPs (must be trained for that specific item of plant).
- Continually monitor weather conditions.
Discussion points
- Assess ground conditions (uneven surface could result in MEWP overturning).
- Check for overhead obstructions (especially overhead power lines) remembering the height MEWP can be extended to.
- Beware of collision with other vehicles, plant, equipment, and scaffolding. Be particularly aware when using near public footpaths and streets. Remember to allow for boom and arcs.
- Always check that the plant is stable before use, deploy stabilisers, and outriggers as required.
- Any tools and materials taken on board must be secured so far as is reasonably practical to ensure they don’t fall from the edge.
- It’s recommended that operators employ safety harnesses as secondary protection.
- Never exceed Safe Working Loads (SWL).
- When manoeuvring in tight areas or near public rights of way, ensure a banksman/slinger is deployed.
- Consider refuelling options (LPG and diesel). Refuelling should take place in the open air where practical, and the engine must be switched off.
- Any diesel and fuel spillages should be cleaned up immediately.
- MEWPs must be subject to thorough examinations at least once every six months and should be subject to regular local inspections, the findings of which should be recorded.
