First Aid Risk Assessment
It is a legal requirement for all UK employers to undertake a first aid risk assessment.
We can provide you with a full first aid risk assessment to ensure you are fully compliant with UK law.
Following the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, employers have a legal obligation to ensure that adequate provisions are in place for their employees, should they become ill or injured at work. The Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) also sets out guidelines for what is deemed to be adequate.
Under these guidelines, all UK employers or self-employed persons must ensure that a first aid risk assessment is conducted on their premises to assess what first aid facilities are needed. In the event that an adequate risk assessment has not been carried out, the employer or self-employed person will be held accountable. The employer will be prosecuted if found to have neglected or not complied with UK regulations. This can involve heavy fees or even jail terms. To avoid this, act now and ensure that you have a first aid risk assessment at your workplace.
Completing a first aid risk assessment
According to government guidance, first aid must be ‘adequate and appropriate in the circumstances’. Therefore, first aid provisions will vary in every workplace. Guidance stipulates that a first aid risk assessment should include the following:
- Employers must ensure a first aid risk assessment has been conducted
- This will involve identifying the hazards and who is at risk, along with other factors such as the size of the workforce and type of work carried out
- This will enable an assessor to determine what type of first aid equipment should be provided
- The risk assessment should also identify how many first aid personnel should be provided and issue correct training and instruction to other employees
