COSHH Risk Assessment
COSHH Risk Assessment
A COSHH risk assessment involves identifying any substances and activities in the workplace that could lead to the exposure of hazardous substances which could be damaging to health.
Health hazards are not always obvious. Thousands of workers every year suffer from illnesses such as asthma, cancer and skin diseases caused by hazardous substances in the workplace.
Substances that are labelled as hazardous will be assessed under COSHH but also substances that arise from processing and germs will be covered. If you are unsure if you require a COSHH assessment, call us today for more information and advice.
COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health which requires that all employers are legally obliged to undertake a COSHH risk assessment.
A COSHH risk assessment involves the following:
- Identifying the substances that are harmful by reading the labels, contacting suppliers and ensuring any harmful substances produced by processing have been identified;
- Identifying who is at risk from harmful substances, including the public and visitors, and how they may be affected eg. if the substance is breathed in, contracted via skin contact or exposed accidentally;
- Evaluating these risks by deciding how harmful they are and what the necessary precautions should be, eg. can you reduce the exposure or provide protective clothing;
- Adopting any of the following measures: adapting the process to reduce the risk, containing the risk, regular cleaning or changing how long a person is exposed to the risk.
If you have more than 5 employees your risk assessment must be recorded. A COSHH risk assessment should be updated regularly and especially if significant changes to the workplace occur.
In order to ensure a comprehensive COSHH risk assessment has been conducted, a competent person with experience of dealing with hazardous substances is required. We can provide you with NEBOSH-accredited consultants who will ensure your workers and business are fully protected from the harms of hazardous substances.
